Darrell Hamby
Darrell Hamby, 1957-1987 Darrell Hamby Memorial Food Bank New Orleans, LA
tribute by Carol MueryI knew Darrell from Choir and I remember the pride he felt when he passed the audition for A Cappella Choir. He smiled, laughed, and generally made everyone laugh. But when it came to actually practicing and singing in public or competitions, his focus was on what needed to be done. He was a great friend and I don't think he met a stranger. I miss him and wish that he could have been at the reunion 5 years ago--the first one that I had been to since 1980. I am sure he would have been a blast and worked it on the dance floor!! Miss you bud!!
tribute by Susan ChaffinI am devastated to hear about Darrell. I was just thinking about him the other day and wondered how he was doing. He and I worked together at Krystal during a couple of summers. He was so thoughtful and a great friend. God bless him.
tribute by Donna MahieuxWe met at summer band marching practice in the pits of hell behind BHS. We were both hot and irritable, and he was a newbie. When I told him how to stand at attention, his first words to me were, "YOU BITCH!" Thus began a weird and wonderful friendship. Darrell was outgoing, friendly, and very, very funny. We were part of a small group of friends that went to the all-night drive-in movies at the 72 Drive-in. He once brought an enormous garbage bag full of popcorn--which we finished!--and because we paid a flat price per carload, he once had to ride in the trunk as we had an extra friend that night and Darrell was the smallest! He took me to my senior prom so our group could be together, and I couldn't have had a better time. I started college that fall, and as happens with big changes, we lost touch. However, I never forgot him---and I never will. And I still have that prom photo! I love you, Darrell, and I am sure that you are still mouthing off in heaven and making God laugh. Margaret xox
tribute by Margaret WilkieWe performed half-times at all the football games and band competitions. I remember him as being serious about his musical ability. He worked hard and did well. Hope you are playing in the great band in heaven.
